We woke up fairly early for a ‘rest’ day but we had decided to leave for Kimberley by ten for the first workshop. Pieter however managed to get a physio appointment for his knee and left as early as possible to be back in time. On his return P told us that he had been ‘needled’ in the inner thigh (which made him think of England) and that basically the cycling will make the knee worse but it will eventually heal with time (six months after the Cycle Tour when he will need major surgery and possible amputation – that is a joke people!!). The thigh muscle is apparently tight and is pulling his kneecap backwards which in turn is chaffing against the knee. OUCH!
We eventually left Bloem at 11h00 and then
struggled to find the Boitshoko School in Galeshewe in Kimberley where we
dropped off a TV, a DVD player, some DVDs and more books for their little
library. We then found the Kimberley Teachers’ Centre and even though I had
been liaising with the Department of Education from February about the
workshop, schools were notified by email this
morning about it. In the end we had 15 attendees who copiously took notes. I
spoke about disability in general and then focussed on autism, Pieter spoke
about classroom intervention and did really well, Shaun spoke about his
experiences as a parent with passion and without a sweat!
We travelled back in the dusk and enjoyed
the pink, purple and blue hues of the sunset. We had left-over supper (which
was delivered by a neighbour last night), chatted to Marcelle who arrived home
after a weekend in Cape Town), and watched a Grade B movie starring Demi Moore.
The plan was to retire to bed after packing the van for a very early start
tomorrow morning.
We are planning to leave at 05h30 for
Kimberley to fetch Mark Buckley, a volunteer driver who is a chemistry student
from UNISA from the airport at 07h10. The boys then mount their bikes for a mammoth
ride to Lime Acres – a 160 km ride away! I will go ahead to start a workshop
there at 15h00 and will be hoping to be joined by the boys on their bicycles
halfway through the workshop. Until tomorrow g’night dynamite xxx
